SRINAGAR: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Friday sealed eight premises across the city’s South and West zones during an enforcement drive against unauthorised pet clinics and unlicensed animal breeding facilities.
The action was carried out under Order No. 1142 issued by the Joint Commissioner (Administration), SMC, which directed joint inspection teams to check unregulated animal commercialisation and enforce statutory municipal standards.
Municipal Veterinary Officer Parmeet Pal Singh and Chief Enforcement Officer Suhail Nabi Chintsaz were designated as nodal officers to oversee the operation and compile the action-taken report.
In the South Zone, civic teams sealed four premises across Batmaloo (Ward 28), Jawahar Nagar (Ward 30), and the Rambagh–Natipora sector (Ward 31). Another four commercial premises were sealed in the West Zone in the Karan Nagar area under Ward 22.
The inspection teams comprised Veterinary Assistant Surgeons, Zonal Enforcement Officers, Zonal Sanitation Officers, Building Inspectors and respective Ward Officers. They inspected several establishments, including private veterinary polyclinics and commercial pet vendors.
Officials found animals, primarily pedigree cats, housed in cages without mandatory municipal permissions or statutory breeding documentation.
Veterinary ambulances and civic support vehicles also accompanied the teams during the inspections to assist in the exercise and assess animal welfare conditions at the sites.
SMC authorities said strict regulatory scrutiny will continue across all municipal wards to curb unauthorised clinical operations and unregulated animal trade. (KDC)
