Srinagar Municipal Corporation started implementing the High Court direction seeking closure of the commercial structures that have come up in residential areas over the years. In the first leg, the closure exercise has started from Jawahar Nagar.

“Yes, we have started implementing the court orders,” SMC Commissioner Dr G N Qasba said. “The court direction is to seal as many as 39 structures which is the first list.” The sealed structures include a number of hotels.

Dr Qasba said commercial activities in residential areas had changed the profile of the place and created lot many problems for the inhabitants. He said the operation is in progress.

In a PIL seeking action against the master plan violation, Kashmir High Court division bench comprising Chief Justice M M Kumar and Justice Ali Muhammad Magrey had directed SMC to seal the buildings as per the notices and demolition order passed on March 16, 2009 or thereafter. Most of these constructions had come up in last one decade in violation of the Srinagar Master Plan.

Last week, the State Pollution Control Board had sealed 15 hotels in Gulmarg lacking operating in violation of water and air pollution prevention norms. This was also done under court directions.
