National Conference on Thursday expressed amusement at PDP President Mehbooba Mufti’s need to have clandestine meetings with top BJP leaders when both parties have openly declared the continuation of their alliance in the State and said this was an eye-opener for those deluded into attributing ideological motives to the delay in Government formation.

Referring to the clandestine, late-evening meeting between BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav and PDP President Mehbooba Mufti at the latter’s residence in Srinagar on Wednesday, NC Provincial President Nasir Aslam Wani said PDP should openly own up its political merger with the BJP rather than organizing such meetings in the cloak of darkness.

Referring to BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav’s media interaction on Thursday evening, the NC Provincial President said if PDP and BJP plan to continue their alliance and association as per as the already existing ‘Agenda of the Alliance’, why did they deprive the people of the State of an elected Government all this while?

“If both parties had a preconceived plan to go ahead with Government formation from day one, why did Mehbooba Mufti publically announce that the Government of India would have to take certain ‘Confidence Building Measures’ (CBMs) to allegedly instill confidence in the alliance and provide a ‘fillip’ to the new PDP-BJP Government? Ram Madhav’s remarks have exposed PDP’s posturing,” Wani said in a statement.

“BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav was sneaked into Srinagar and then to PDP President Ms. Mehbooba Mufti’s residence at Gupkar by the Intelligence Bureau brazenly in their own vehicle, and apparently accompanied by IB officials. One begs to ask two important questions – Why do PDP and BJP feel the need to meet secretly in the cloak of darkness when they admittedly continue to be in an alliance? And second why is the Intelligence Bureau playing such an open role in the internal political machinations between two political allies? Is this not a gross misuse of Government machinery and institutions?”

The NC Provincial President advised the PDP to hold its power-sharing negotiations with the BJP in broad daylight and not inconvenience itself by elaborately planning such clandestine secret meetings.

“This shrill rhetoric about ‘going alone’ and ‘starting from zero’ cannot fool the people of J&K anymore now that cover has been blown off of PDP’s secret meetings with the BJP. When compared to Mehbooba Mufti’s stentorian, moralistic rhetoric and speeches, this is proving to be quite an anti-climax and expectedly so,” he said.

“PDP’s and Mehbooba Mufti’s conspicuous silence on the harassment and hounding of Kashmiri students in Delhi is also yet another indication of their continued subservience to the BJP. They clearly don’t want to ruffle any feathers in Delhi, even if it means summarily ignoring the plight of harassed Kashmiri students.”
