Snow Blankets Gulmarg, Other Jammu and Kashmir Regions

   

SRINAGAR: Parts of Kashmir, including the renowned ski resort Gulmarg, witnessed fresh snowfall on Saturday, causing a drop in temperatures across Jammu & Kashmir. However, the night temperature slightly improved in central and northern districts of Kashmir, while in south Kashmir, the night temperature recorded a further dip.

According to details, areas such as Gulmarg, Bandipora higher reaches, Sadhna Top, Gurez Valley higher reaches, Mughal Road, including Peer ki Gali, Z-Gali, and Machil areas, experienced fresh snowfall on Saturday.

The Mughal Road was closed for vehicular movement after the recent snowfall.

The fresh snowfall, however, led to a dip in the maximum temperature across Jammu and Kashmir.

Nonetheless, the minimum temperature improved across Kashmir, with Pahalgam, a famous tourist destination, recording the coldest temperature at minus 5.1 degrees Celsius.

Sub-zero temperatures were recorded across all stations, with Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, experiencing minus 1.3 degrees Celsius. Qazigund, the gateway of Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 3.8 degrees Celsius. Gulmarg, a renowned ski resort, reported a low of minus 2.8 degrees Celsius.

In Kupwara, the mercury settled at minus 1.0 degrees Celsius, while in Kokernag, a minimum temperature of minus 3.6 degrees Celsius was recorded.

Among the Automatic Weather Stations, the Shopian station was the coldest at minus 6.5 degrees Celsius.

Director of the Meteorological Department (MeT), Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, in a detailed forecast, predicted mainly dry weather conditions from tomorrow until December 23rd.

He stated that the weather is expected to remain generally cloudy, with the possibility of light snow over isolated higher reaches from December 24th to December 26th.

“Overall, there is no significant weather activity till December 26th,” he said, adding that the improvement in the minimum temperature was recorded due to a feeble Western Disturbance (WD) until tomorrow, thereafter likely to fall by 1-3 degrees Celsius,” he said. (KNO)
