An elderly woman lost her life on Friday evening due to a biting-cold, after walking by foot for hours amid the snowfall in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

An official said that four Tata Sumo vehicles and a Tata mobile load carrier were on their way from Kupwara to Karnah, however, due to the accumulation of snow, the vehicles got stuck near Sadna Top, forcing the 43 passengers to travel by walk till the last stop at Sadhna where the army camp is located.

One among the passengers, an elderly woman identified as Taja Begam, 75, wife of Abdul Qayoom, a resident of Karnah, couldn’t survive in the biting cold and passed away.

However, the other passengers are said to be stable now but are stuck at the army camp when this report was filed.

Meanwhile, a concerned police official said that all the passengers accept the deceased woman is safe. “An accommodation has been provided to all of them and the operation to rescue them will be stated from tomorrow morning,” he said.
