SRINAGAR: Fresh snowfall was recorded at Peer Ki Gali, Sinthan Top and Ahrabal in south Kashmir on Friday, as temperatures dropped in higher-altitude areas, while the Meteorological Centre forecast generally dry weather for most of the Kashmir region between October 25 and 31.
Light snowfall was also reported in the upper reaches of Pir Ki Gali along the historic Mughal Road, marking the first snowfall of the season in the area. Despite the fresh snow, the Mughal Road, which connects Poonch-Rajouri with Shopian in south Kashmir, remained open to traffic.
The snowfall brought colder conditions to the upper reaches of Poonch district, prompting people to wear warmer clothing. Officials said they were monitoring the weather situation and advised commuters to drive cautiously due to slippery road conditions at higher elevations.
An official of the Meteorological Centre said brief spells of light rain could occur at a few places in Kashmir on Saturday afternoon.
According to the forecast, weather is likely to remain generally dry from October 25 to 31, although cloudy conditions are expected towards the end of the period.
Generally cloudy weather, accompanied by light rain and light snowfall in higher reaches, is likely at a few places between November 1 and 3. Similar conditions may prevail at a few to many places on November 4 and 5, the forecast said.
The Meteorological Centre has advised farmers to continue harvesting and other agricultural operations.
Meanwhile, Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 21.3 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 4.9 degrees Celsius. Gulmarg recorded a maximum of 14.4 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 2.8 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam registered a maximum of 19.2 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 2 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
