Srinagar: An army soldier was killed and four others were injured as India and Pakistan armies exchanged fire and mortar shells along the Line of Control in Rajouri and Kupwara district on Tuesday. A civilian was also injured in the skirmishes in Kupwara, an official said.
“Pakistan army resorted to unprovoked ceasefire violation along the Line of Control (LoC) in Sunderbani sector of Rajouri. Indian Army responded strongly and effectively. Heavy damage to Pak Army posts and casualties to Pak soldiers have been inflicted by own troops,” army’s spokesperson Lt Col Devender Anand said in a statement.
In the exchange of fire, one soldier Naik Krishan Lal suffered grave injuries and died. Meanwhile, a senior army officer said that the Pakistani army resorted to unprovoked firing on the forward Indian positions in Tanghdar, Keran, Jumgund, Bungus and Chowkibal areas of Kupwara district.
“Pakistani army targeted Indian positions along the LoC in Tanghdar around 01:30 pm,” the army official told news agency GNS. The officer said that the soldiers manning the fence responded strongly.
“Unprovoked Ceasefire Violation including calibre escalation (Artillery fire) by Pakistan in Tangdhar Sector since 1300 hours today. Own troops retaliated strongly, resulting in heavy casualties on the enemy side,” army’s Srinagar based spokesperson Col Rajesh Kalia said in a statement.
However, sources said that two soldiers namely Darshan Kumar and Naik Nitesh Kumar of 154 Brigade sustained injuries in Pakistani shelling in Tanghdar sector. Also, Two soldiers of 2 Jat were injured near Jall Post Sector and they have been identified as Havaldar Narendar Singh and Sepoy Manoj kumar. All the injured have been hospitalized, they said.
Also, a civilian Ikhlaq Hussain was also injured and admitted at SDH Tanghdar, the sources added.
