UPA Chairperson and Congress President, Sonia Gandhi praised the NC-Congress coalition government in J&K and termed the huge participation of J&K people in Panchayati elections as “a verdict in favour of peace and democracy”.

“National Conference and Congress coalition government is doing well and its efforts have brought a visible change in Jammu and Kashmir,” Sonia said while speaking at a rally in Banihal on Wednesday after she along with the Prime Minister inaugurated the Qazigund-Banihal rail service.

She lauded the people of Jammu and Kashmir for voting in large numbers during the Panchayati elections. “The huge participation in the Panchayati elections clearly indicates that J&K people want peace and democracy,” Sonia said adding “Jammu and Kashmir youth want economic independence and UPA government pledges to provide them everything they need to fulfill their aspirations because the central government is well aware about the aspirations of J&K youth.”

“The people of Jammu and Kashmir want to look and go forward on the path of progress,” Sonia said adding “UPA government is ready to provide them with all facilities.”

She congratulated the people of Jammu and Kashmir for the completion of Qazigund-Banihal railway line and praised the railway engineers. Sonia termed the project as “a new beginning” in the state and said that it will certainly open the doors of progress and prosperity of the people. She said that the “dream” of linking Kashmir with train was dreamt by late Indira Gandhi.

On the final day of her two-day visit to the state, Sonia along with the prime minister opened nearly 11-km-long tunnel to link the towns of Bannihal and Qazigund in the two regions.
