SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday issued the following statement regarding south Kashmir encounters saying that on specific inputs regarding presence of militants, two joint cordon and search operations were launched by Police and security forces in Awantipora and Shopian.

A police spokesman in a statement said that Awantipora Police along with 50RR and 140Bn CRPF launched a joint cordon and search operation in Meej Pampore area. While as another joint CASO was carried out in Bandhpawa Munand by Shopian Police, 44RR and 178Bn CRPF.

“During the search operations in the said areas, the hiding militants fired on the joint search parties. The fire was retaliated leading to encounters at both places,” said the spokesman.

He said that in the ensuing encounters, so far one militant was killed in each encounter and their bodies were retrieved.

“Both the encounters are still continuing and further details shall follow once the encounters are concluded,” he said.

“People are requested to be away from the encounter sites till the encounters are over and the areas are sanitised and cleared from explosive materials, if any,” said police spokesman in a statement.
