SRINAGAR: Police in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district have detected and destroyed an illicit opium poppy cultivation in the Achabal area, officials said on Wednesday.
Acting on specific inputs received through local beat policing, a team from Police Station Achabal identified alleged illegal cultivation by one Ghulam Rasool Mir, son of Mohammad Abdullah Mir, a resident of Pushroo Achabal. The poppy crop was reportedly grown on around one marla of land.
Following the information, police personnel, along with an Executive Magistrate and officials from the Agriculture Department, conducted a spot verification. During the inspection, the illicit crop was confirmed and subsequently destroyed as per legal procedure.
Police said FIR No. 47/2026 has been registered at Police Station Achabal under relevant provisions of law, and further investigation is underway.
Anantnag Police reiterated its commitment to curbing drug-related activities and urged the public to assist by reporting any instances of illegal cultivation, trafficking, or abuse of narcotic substances.
