SRINAGAR: Seven persons have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act as police in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district intensified their anti-drug campaign across the district, officials said on Tuesday.
According to police, five individuals were found positive for drug consumption during a testing exercise conducted in Bijbehara by Anantnag Police in coordination with a medical team using a Rapid Drug Detection Kit.
The individuals have been identified as Ghulam Nabi Hajam of SICOP Bijbehara, Khursheed Ahmad Sheikh of Tak Mohalla Bijbehara, Waseem Ahmad Dhobi of Badroo Srigufwara, Showkat Ahmad Sheikh of Sheikh Mohalla Bijbehara and Sartaj Ahmad Chori Saz of SICOP Bijbehara.
Police said separate FIRs numbered 165/2026, 166/2026, 167/2026, 168/2026 and 169/2026 were registered against them under Section 8/27 of the NDPS Act.
In a separate operation under the ongoing anti-drug campaign, Police Station Kokernag acted on specific information regarding two individuals found under suspicious circumstances at different locations.
The two were apprehended and subjected to medical examination, following which their test reports returned positive for drug consumption, police said.
The accused have been identified as Tanveer Ahmed Malik of Zalangam and Subair Ahmed Tantry of Zalangam. Cases have been registered against them vide FIR Nos. 75/2026 and 76/2026 respectively under Section 8/27 of the NDPS Act.
Police said further investigation is underway in all the cases.
Reiterating its zero-tolerance policy against drug abuse, Anantnag Police urged members of the public to assist law enforcement agencies by sharing credible information related to drug peddling and substance abuse.
