Speaker Disallows Article 370, Statehood Amendments in Assembly

SRINAGAR: Legislative Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather on Tuesday said he had rejected an amendment moved by Peoples Conference president Sajad Gani Lone on Article 370, stating that the House had already passed a resolution on the matter.

Following Question Hour, Lone questioned the Speaker’s decision to disallow amendments related to Article 370, Article 35A, statehood, and the rationalisation of reservations.

The Speaker explained that Assembly rules do not permit discussion on issues that have already been debated or decided by the House. He also clarified that the restoration of statehood does not fall within the authority of the government.

Lone contested the ruling, saying he was not seeking the passage of any law on statehood but only placing the House’s intent on record regarding its restoration.
