A special police officer (SPO) on Friday decamped with eight service weapons of colleagues from a police post guarding residence of a legislator at Jawahar Nagar, Srinagar.

An official said that an SPO identified as Adil Bashir Sheikh, 24, (Belt No. 488/SPO) a resident of Zainapora Shopian on Friday evening decamped with the service weapons including seven AK-rifles and one pistol from the guard room at J-11, Government Quarters Jawahar Nagar.

The residential quarter belongs to MLA Wachi, Aijaz Mir where the SPO stole the weapons.

Sheikh was engaged as SPO on March 11, 2017, he said.

Police Version

A police spokesman in a statement said that a Personal Security Officer of MLA Wachi Aijaz Ahmad Mir approached  Police Station Rajbagh   and stated  that the weapons of 7 personal security officers who are attached with MLA Wachi have allegedly been missing from his residence at Jawahar Nagar including 7 AK-47 rifles and 1 pistol which is a licensed personal weapon of  Aijaz Mir.

“It also alleged the role of  SPO Adil Bashir of Zainpora, Shopian in the commission of a crime,” the spokesman said.

“On this, Police Party has reached the place of occurrence and taken the cognizance of the matter. Also a case FIR No 57/18 has been lodged in P.S Rajbagh and investigation has been initiated,” he said.

A manhunt has been launched in the area to nab the cop, police sources said.
