SRINAGAR

Sporadic firing is going on in the Keran sector of Kupwara district along Line of Control (LoC) between the Indian army and infiltrators, on day 10, Sources said.

The Indian army says five of its soldiers have been injured and 12 intruders have been killed, though none of their bodies have been recovered.

“This is not a pure infiltration attempt. These could be 20 to30 in number and may include (the Pakistan army’s) BAT,” Lieutenant General Gurmeet Singh of the 15 corps said on Wednesday, referring to the Border Action Team of the Pakistani army. The unit consists of members of Pakistan’s commando Special Services Group.

According to sources the fighting began on September 24 when a group of at least 30 militants tried to cross over from Pakistan into India.

Meanwhile the Pakistan army has denied that it is involved with a massive infiltration attempt in Kashmir. The encounter in the Kupwara area is now in its 10th day. Yesterday, the Indian army said that Pakistani troops might be involved.

“No such thing happened at all. This is a blatant lie. We totally deny this baseless allegation,” a Pakistani military spokesperson reportedly said.
