PDP Youth Wing is intimating to organize “Mufti Mohammad Sayeed Memorial” Cricket Tournament later in May.

With an aim to keep youth of Kashmir away from “drug addiction and immoral activities”, PDP Youth wing, in a statement issued late Friday evening, said that it is “focusing on other co-curricular activities”.

“Sixty Four (64) Cricket teams are going to participate in this Mega Event. Around One thousand players will be seen exhibiting their talent in this tournament. This tournament will be a Mega event in the district and will boost the cricket players to a large extent,” the statement said.

“We have already organized several cricket tournaments in past & previous years like in 2014 IPL pattern tournament was organized where bidding of players was made & the whole tournament was based on IPL pattern,” said Owais Khan, PDP Youth President Shopian.

Shopian Rockers Cricket Club won the 1st title of Shopian cricket League SCL-I but only 12 teams participated in the said tournament likewise in 2015 sixteen teams participated in SCL-II but this year the whole district is involved in this mega SCL-III which is going to be held in the month of May 2016, the statement informed.

“SCL-III will be played at Batapora Sports stadium Shopian. There will be two pools, pool-A will have 32 teams & pool-B will also have 32 teams. Tournament will be played in two parts; in first round 57 knock-out matches will be played in both pools and then will be having Top 8 teams who will qualify for 2nd round of the tournament. Those lucky 08 teams will then play 27 league matches in allotted printed colourful uniforms & the four top teams on the table will play semi-final matches out of which two winning teams will play a grand finale,” the statement added.

While appreciating the role played by the youth of the area, Owais Khan, who is also Vice-Chairman of the district Youth club Shopian said, “our vision is to mend gaps between the youth & the society, to create a forum which will share knowledge, information on various occasions. Our goal is to prevent youth from immoral and unlawful activities and to spread the message of peace through this game and we will try to give information about the drug addiction and its ill effects particularly on individual and society in general. We would love to involve the families of these cricketers so we can involve them also in this game. We want to stress on youth development in a positive way.”

He further added that the game will provide an opportunity to the youth to engage in valuable and positive relationship with adult members of the society. “Idle time of the youth can be filled with such activities and youth can be prevented from the activities which are harmful to society at large.”
