SRINAGAR: Rafiq Ahmed Sofi, a master artisan from Eidgah in Srinagar, has been selected for the National Award 2025 in the hand-knotted carpet category, becoming the sole awardee from Jammu and Kashmir in the category for the year.

The award has been conferred by the Union Ministry of Textiles in recognition of his carpet featuring intricate floral designs, traditional architectural patterns and calligraphic elements.
The Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir, congratulated Sofi on the achievement, describing it as recognition of his craftsmanship and contribution to the region’s traditional carpet-weaving industry.
In a statement issued on Thursday, a departmental spokesman said the national recognition would help strengthen the profile of Kashmir’s carpet industry and bring greater attention to its traditional skills.
Kashmir’s hand-knotted carpets are rooted in a centuries-old craft tradition characterised by intricate knotting techniques, distinctive designs and the taleem system, which guides the weaving process. The craft received Geographical Indication (GI) registration in 2016 based on its geographical origin.
The spokesman said Sofi’s achievement reflected the continuing quality and relevance of Kashmir’s traditional handicrafts. The Directorate also encouraged artisans across the region to draw inspiration from his success and maintain the high standards of craftsmanship associated with the sector.
A formal award ceremony is scheduled for December 2026, when Sofi will be felicitated alongside other award recipients.
