SRINAGAR
The 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh road connecting the ladakh region with Kashmir was closed for traffic on Wednesday due to landslides, triggered by heavy rains.
Official sources told CNS that traffic on Srinagar-Leh road has been closed due to landslides at two different places in Zojila pass area.
“A large number of vehicles, including those carrying essentials for Ladakh region were not allowed to proceed towards Kargil and are stranded at Sonamarag,” Manzoor Ahmed, traffic inspector, said.
The official added that the Border Roads Organization (BRO), responsible for maintenance of the road, has pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the highway. “The road would be through for traffic if rain stops, however there is more danger of avalanches as intermittent rain continues,” he said.
