SRINAGAR: Srinagar Smart City’s eco-friendly city bus service has witnessed a significant increase in passenger flow, with an average of 30,000 people boarding daily across 16 operational routes.
The eco-friendly public transport system, launched in November 2023, has seen remarkable growth, transporting 61,33,160 commuters between January and November this year.
Data reveals that September recorded the highest passenger count of over 7.2 lakh, followed by August with over 6.82 lakh passengers.
In November 2023, when the bus service began, the month recorded a modest passenger count of 1.3 lakh, which increased to over 3.25 lakh in December 2023.
Officials said that the green bus fleet consists of 100 electric buses, including 75 nine-metre and 25 twelve-metre variants. Two additional buses are kept on standby to address potential breakdowns.
The electric buses are noted for being emission-free and feature advanced amenities such as air conditioning, air curtains for consistent interior temperature, and five strategically placed cameras to enhance safety.
Additionally, each bus is equipped with a panic button connected to a command-and-control centre, ensuring immediate assistance in emergencies.
Officials overseeing the operation of the smart buses under Srinagar Smart City said that an Integrated Public Transport System has been developed. This system details bus routes, stops, halting points, depots, and charging stations to streamline the service.
To further enhance passenger convenience, authorities plan to establish 360 ultra-modern bus stops across Srinagar.
The proposed bus stops will feature a Passenger Information System (PIS), providing real-time updates on bus movements and displaying route maps. Equipped with monitor displays, they will offer detailed information on bus timings and routes.
“Work on these advanced bus stops is expected to begin next month, with surveys currently underway,” an official said. (KNO)
