SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has designated the offices of the Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) of the State Investigation Agency (SIA) as police stations to register and investigate cases.
The Union Territory’s Home Department, in a notification, stated that the offices of SSP, SIA, Kashmir and SSP, SIA, Jammu have been officially declared as police stations for their respective regions. These will serve the territorial jurisdictions of Kashmir and Jammu for the SIA.
The notification, issued under Section 2(1)(U) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, was dated November 19, 2024.
The SIA was established on November 01, 2021, by the Jammu and Kashmir administration to ensure the swift and effective investigation and prosecution of militancy-related cases. It also acts as the nodal agency for coordination with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and other central agencies.
In its 2021 order regarding the creation of the SIA, the Home Department stated that the agency has the authority to suo moto register First Information Reports (FIRs). The order also instructed all officers in charge of police stations to notify the SIA immediately upon registering terrorism-related cases or discovering terrorism linkages during investigations.
