Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Tariq Karra emphasised the need for a structured platform that would facilitate discussions among alliance partners and ensure smooth governance.

Karra stated that the committee would not only help address political disagreements but also serve as a mechanism to enhance governance by pooling collective wisdom. He underscored that a primary focus of the committee would be the restoration of Jammu & Kashmir’s statehood, a core demand of the Congress Party.

Expressing frustration over the delayed statehood restoration, Karra questioned the commitment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to fulfilling their promises.

“What is stopping them from restoring statehood to J&K? Why is it being delayed? I doubt their intentions,” he said.

Karra’s remarks came in response to recent statements by Omar Abdullah, who urged patience regarding statehood. However, Karra rejected the idea of waiting indefinitely, reiterating that Congress had contested elections on the promise of swift statehood restoration.

“Delaying it further does not reflect good intentions toward the people of Jammu & Kashmir,” he added.

The JKPCC chief, who is also the MLA from Central Shalteng, stressed that the proposed coordination committee would strengthen alliance communication and improve engagement with the Central government on crucial political matters.

Dismissing rumours about Congress withdrawing from the alliance, Karra called such reports malicious, concocted, and baseless.

“Congress remains a committed alliance partner, but we will not participate in the cabinet until statehood is restored,” he said. (KNO)
