SRINAGAR

Scores of people from Sumberbugh Pampore Monday staged a protest and threatened to commit suicide if the cesspool created due to drainage failure is not diverted and eradicated in coming days. They alleged that ‘illegal’ stone-crushers do not allow the locals to divert the cesspool while police do not bother to initiate any action against them due to reasons better known to police.

Scores of people from SDA Colony Sumberbugh Pampore assembled in Press Enclave Srinagar and complained that cesspool emanating foul smell round the clock has come into the existence due to drainage failure.

“Whenever we try to divert and eradicate this stinking cesspool, stone-crushers use their influence and stop us. Some police officials are hand in glove with these ‘illegal’ stone-crushers and we fail to understand why police is not taking any action against the owners of these stone-crushers, despite our repeated pleas and protest,” president SDA Colony Sumberbugh Farooq Ahmed told CNS and appealed IGP Kashmir to take note of the matter.

They said that due to the faulty drainage system, the stinking sewage seeps into their homes and stench emanating from it is intolerable. “We cannot even use our washrooms. Our houses are full of mess and it is difficult to cook food due to the stink flowing from the cesspool,” said a female protester.

The protesters threatened that they will commit suicide if action against owners of stone-crusher is not initiated and cesspool is not eliminated.
