Sub-Zero Temperatures Grip Kashmir as IMD Warns of Fresh Western Disturbances

   

SRINAGAR: Sub-zero temperatures continued across the Kashmir Valley, with several areas experiencing severe overnight cold, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that two western disturbances are likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir from today onwards.

According to data compiled by Kashmir Weather, the lowest minimum temperature in the Valley was recorded at Sonamarg at minus 6.1 degrees Celsius, followed by Pulwama at minus 5.8 degrees, Shopian at minus 5.4 degrees and Anantnag at minus 5.3 degrees Celsius. Srinagar city recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.4 degrees, while the temperature at Srinagar Airport settled at minus 3.8 degrees Celsius.

Other stations in the Valley also reported freezing conditions, including Pahalgam at minus 4.4 degrees, Gulmarg at minus 4.0 degrees, Kupwara at minus 3.7 degrees, Budgam at minus 3.7 degrees and Ganderbal at minus 1.6 degrees Celsius.

In the Jammu region, temperatures remained comparatively higher, with Jammu city recording a minimum of 7.2 degrees Celsius and Jammu Airport 7.3 degrees. However, colder conditions prevailed in the hilly areas, with Banihal recording minus 2.2 degrees, Bhaderwah minus 1.5 degrees and Udhampur 1.0 degree Celsius.

In Ladakh, intense cold persisted, with Leh recording minus 10.6 degrees Celsius, Hanle minus 11.0 degrees, Kargil minus 8.4 degrees and Nubra Valley minus 6.1 degrees.

Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a weather advisory stating that two western disturbances in quick succession are likely to impact Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas from January 22 to 24 and again from the night of January 26 to the forenoon of January 28. The system is expected to bring light to moderate rain and snowfall at higher reaches, officials said.

The weather department has advised residents, tourists and travellers to remain alert and follow official updates during the forecast period.
