The State Vigilance Organization (SVO) has registered a case against officials of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) in a case of manipulation of tenders for purchase of uniforms during year 2008-09.

According to a SVO statement, Farooq Ahmad Mir, then Purchase and Procurement Officer, Leela Chanda then Chief Accounts Officer, SMC Srinagar and others have been booked in connection with the purchase of 2289 uniforms on exorbitant rates of Rs 1500/- per uniform from a favourite supplier by manipulation of tenders during the year 2008-09.

The manipulation had been done to benefit a firm namely M/S Gulzar Agencies, Abiguzar Srinagar for purchase of uniform of safaiwalas of SMC Srinagar which resulted huge loss to the State Exchequer, the statement added.

“During the course of verification, it has been found that these public servants in connivance with each other had showered undue benefit upon supplier firm M/S Gulzar agencies Abiguzar, Srinagar by manipulating the documents and issued order for the supply of 2289 sets of uniforms on exorbitant rate of Rs 1500 per set exclusive of VAT charges. The supplied items of uniform were found under specification with respect to weight by around 20% in respect of one item i.e jacket as per technical report thereby again causing huge loss to the state exchequer”, the statement further reads.
