SRINAGAR: Over the last four months, the State Taxes Department has taken strict actions against tax evaders, resulting in the imposition of a penalty of Rs 1.63 crore.

These enforcement activities were conducted under the guidance of Commissioner State Tax Rashmi Singh and the supervision of Additional Commissioner State Taxes (Administration & Enforcement) Namrita Dogra, along with DC Enforcement Samba and Udhampur (Additional charge) Sanjay Gupta.

Deputy Commissioner State Taxes Samba reported that the Department imposed a penalty of Rs 98.70 lakh in Samba, Rajouri, and Poonch regions, and Rs 65.57 lakh in Udhampur region on vehicles within the period of April 2023 to July 2023. The penalties were imposed on those found to be lacking proper documentation required for the transportation of goods.

These checks and enforcement actions were carried out by the State Tax Officers of the Enforcement wing in Samba, Udhampur, Rajouri, and Poonch districts. Additionally, a significant number of 1, 75,395 E-way bills were verified by various teams of STOs, which played a crucial role in controlling tax evasion.

To address the issue of stranded vehicles due to uncertain climatic conditions, the Taxes Department issued specific SOPs/guidelines to taxpayers, transporters, and business establishments, offering necessary assistance.

It’s worth noting that J&K has witnessed significant growth in the collection of goods and services tax during the current fiscal year, exceeding the national average by 23.89 percent. This notable increase in revenue is a testament to the effectiveness of the enforcement activities carried out by the State Taxes Department.
