Police Sunday disallowed Tehreek-e-Hurriyat’s (TeH) Foundation Day function which was to be held at its chairperson Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s Hyderpora residence, which also serves as the official headquarter for the organisation.

Reports said that members and associates of TeH led by its Secretary General, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, had gathered in the premises of Jamia Masjid Hyderpora early this morning. As they left from there in form of a procession to proceed towards the Geelani’s residence, police intercepted them and stopped their march.

“They were marching in a procession which was against the law and they have not sought permission for that. So police have to intervene and to stop them, because they blocked the Airport road which has to be cleared owing to its importance, particularly in this season of Hajj,” DIG Central Kashmir Ghulam Hassan Bhat told KNS.

The head-on between police and TeH activists resulted in stone pelting. The clashes continued for some time and police used tear gas shells and colour water to disperse the protestors.

DIG Bhat said that the TeH activists dispersed off peacefully after the police action and said that one DSP was injured in the stone pelting.

Meanwhile, TeH spokesperson said that dozens of the activists were injured.

This is for the first time that Syed Ali Geelani was disallowed to hold ‘Foundation Day’ function of his party which was founded on August 07, 2004 after Geelani and his life time associate, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, parted ways with Jama’at-e-Islam.
