At least five people, including a villager and his two sons, were killed when they were buried under a huge avalanche in central Kashmir district of Ganderbal.

Reports said that a group of nine people, going for a rescue operation in Risen Kolan in Ganderbal came under huge avalanche at Gund last evening.

However, they said four people were rescued after a major search operation was undertaken by locals and police.

The search operation continued throughout the night and bodies of five missing persons were recovered early on Tuesday morning.

In another incident, avalanche hit an army post in the Machil sector along the Line of Control in Kupwara on Tuesday. While three army men were found dead, two are yet to be traced.

Reports quoted sources in the Army as having said that multiple avalanches hit the posts in Rampur and Gurez sector in Kashmir.

Rescue operations have been launched by army and police in the hit areas, officials have said.

Quoting a communication from the Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE), the official said low-level avalanche warning had been issued from Tuesday-Wednesday evening for various areas, including Leh.

Meanwhile, about two dozen houses and cowsheds, besides other structures were damaged in snow avalanches in Kupwara, Bandipora and Baramulla districts.
