Three policemen and a civilian were arrested after a woman died during a raid conducted by them at a house in Ahlan Gadol village of the Kokernag area in South Kashmir’s Islamabad district.

The locals and the family members of the deceased alleged that the 65 year old woman Mokhti Begum, W/O Suleiman Naikoo, was beaten to death by the policemen inside their house.

“The policemen came for a raid at around 10:30 Friday night and said that they were looking for a banned substance called discoreia; however we had an argument with them and they beat my mother killing her on spot,” said a village elder, quoting the son of the deceased lady.

The locals held anti-police protest demonstrations amid a complete shut down and demanded that the culprits be brought to book.

“The son in law, Yousuf Dagga, of the deceased should also be held responsible for the killing as it was on his directions the police had conducted the raid, after he had an altercation with his in laws,” said a local, Sajad Ahmad.
He said that this man (Yousuf Dagga) is known in the area for his notoriety and connections with the police.

The police swung into action and arrested the three policemen and the son in law of the deceased; while registering a case, FIR No 173/2012 U/S 379RPC, 6 F A Ac, in this regard.

According to a police press note the lady died of cardiac arrest and the policemen have recovered more than 3 Kg’s of the said banned substance in a cowshed in the vicinity.

Meanwhile the district administration has taken cognizance of the case and the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Islamabad; Nisar Hussain Wani visited the village.

“The accused have been arrested and the investigation has been initiated. We have ordered a post mortem to be conducted to ascertain the facts,” said the ADC.
