SRINAGAR: Police have arrested three persons in connection with a house theft in Baramulla and recovered stolen gold jewellery, officials said.
The theft was reported by Saleema Begum, wife of Mohd Akbar Wani, a resident of Rangwar, after gold jewellery and cash were found missing from an almirah at her residence while she was away on official duty during Independence Day arrangements.
Police registered FIR No. 139/2026 under Sections 331(4) and 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Police Station Baramulla and launched an investigation.
During the probe, police detained Shabir Ahmad Khan, son of Mohd Yousuf Khan of Kanispora, who allegedly admitted his involvement and disclosed that the stolen jewellery had been handed over to Ulfat Rather, daughter of Mohd Yousuf Rather of Pathla, Kanispora.
Police said Ulfat disclosed that she had kept some of the jewellery at her residence, while a pair of gold bangles had been sold to Gousia Ornaments on Jadeed Link Road in Baramulla, owned by Hilal Ahmad Zargar.
Searches led to the recovery of a gold ring and an earring from Ulfat’s residence, while the stolen pair of bangles was recovered from the jewellery shop.
According to police, the bangles were sold for RS 2.40 lakh. Of this, RS 1.80 lakh was transferred online to Ulfat, while RS 60,000 was paid in cash.
Police have so far recovered the pair of gold bangles, one gold ring and one gold earring. Efforts are on to recover the remaining property, including RS 15,000 in cash and another gold earring.
All three accused — Shabir Ahmad Khan, Ulfat Rather and Hilal Ahmad Zargar — have been arrested.
Further investigation is underway.
