To commemorate the twin “martyrdom” anniversaries, JKLF chief Mohammad Yasin Malik Tuesday called for a valley-wide shutdown on Feb 9, 11.

While addressing a party meeting at JKLF headquarters, Malik—while calling for shutdown and protest march on Feb 9,11—said that the struggle and martyrdom of “father of Kashmiri nation martyr” Mohammad Maqbool Butt is a “glorious chapter of our history that will always guide us through the tough journey of freedom struggle”.

Malik said Butt started his struggle when everyone had given up or had in one or the other way shun the path of active resistance.

“He not only chose to fight but also chose the thorny way of struggle. He started as a loner and kissed gallows but soon his struggle and sacrifices motivated the nation of Kashmir and world saw Kashmiris starting a historical revolution for freedom in 1990,” he said, adding Butt is/will remain the “shining notch of this nation” and “we will always keep treading the path shown by him.

While remembering the sacrifice rendered by another Kashmiri Muhammad Afzal Guru, Malik said that Afzal also “kissed gallows” like Maqbool and became immortal—as “it is our belief that martyrs never die”.

He said that the way Butt and Guru were hanged by the Indians and the way their dead bodies and mortal remains are till date being held in prison and the way these martyrs are being denied a proper burial are “glaring examples of Indian oppression and tyrannical attitude”.

“Kashmiris will never shun their demand for the mortal remains of these martyrs,” he said.

Meanwhile, announcing various programs in connection with the “martyrdom anniversaries”, Malik said J&K will observe complete protest shutdown on Tuesday February 9, 2016 (“martyrdom day” of Afzal Guru) and Thursday February 11, 2016 (“martyrdom day” of Maqbool Butt ).

“JKLF will organize a protest march at Lal Chowk on Wednesday, 10th February 2016 to demand the handover of the mortal remains of Butt and Guru to Kashmir. On 11th February, a memorial program will also be held at the birth place of Butt’s native village, Trehgam Kupwara. Also on the same day, protest marches and sit-in will be held across the major cities of the world including Islamabad Pakistan, Lahore, and Karachi etc. Protest programs will also be held in USA, UK, Canada, Germany, Europe, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and other parts of the Middle East.”
