SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir police said they have killed a top militant who was contemporary of Burhan Wani.

Identified as Mehrajuddin Halwai alias Ubaid, police said he was killed in the Handwara encounter. Police tweeted that the IGP Kashmir has termed it a major success. The encounter started around midnight in the Pazipora area of Kralgund in the Handwara belt. Mehrajuddin belonged to the Hizb ul Mahrajuddin militant outfit. 

Reports said the encounter was carried out by a joint posse of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Army’s 32 Rashtriya Rifles and 92 battalion of CRPF. 

Other details of the encounter are still not known. It was not immediately known if the encounter was declared over. Police said the slain militant was involved in a series of attacks.
