SRINAGAR: Three militants killed in a gunfight with the counter-insurgent forces in Mendoora area of Tral in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district were affiliated with Hizbul Mujahedeen outfit, police said.
While addressing a press conference in Srinagar, IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar said that on a specific input generated by Awantipora Police regarding the presence of militants in village Mandoora Tral area of Awantipora, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police, 42RR and 180Bn CRPF in the said area.
“During the search operation as the presence of terrorists got ascertained they were given an opportunity to surrender, however, they fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party, which was retaliated leading to an encounter,” he said.
“In the ensuing encounter, three militants were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter. They have been identified as Waris Hassan resident of Naibugh, Aarif Bashir resident of Monghama and Ahtishamul Haq resident of Check Noorpora area of Awantipora. All the killed terrorists were linked with proscribed outfit HM,” he added.
The IGP said that as per police records the slain militants were part of groups involved in several crimes. On 02/01/2021 Arif Bashir lobbed a hand grenade on security forces near Bus Stand Tral resulting in splinter injuries to one SF jawan and eight civilians.
“Waris Hassan along with others was involved in firing upon patrolling party of Awantipora Police on 05/10/2020. In this regard a case vide FIR No. 140/2021 U/S 7/25 Arms Act 13 UA(P) Act has been already registered in Police Station Awantipora. Besides, the group was also involved in threatening posters of proscribed outfit HM to keep public away from elections and also pasting of threat posters at Dadsara area on 02/12/2020. Accordingly, a case vide FIR No. 182/2020 U/S 506 IPC 13 ULA (P) stands already registered at PS Awantipora,” he said.
“Incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other terror crimes,” he said.
“In this connection police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and investigation has been initiated. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared off of all the explosive materials, if any,” said the IGP Kashmir.
