SRINAGAR: Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar was found dead at his office at the state police headquarters in Agartala on Monday, Hindustan Times reported. The cause of death was not immediately known, and the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.
Following the incident, Chief Minister Manik Saha, Chief Secretary JK Sinha and other senior government officials visited the hospital, The Hindu reported.
Dhankar, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Tripura cadre, assumed charge as the state’s Director General of Police in May 2025 after serving as DGP (Intelligence).
A highly decorated officer with more than three decades of service, he was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service.
He began his policing career in Tripura in 1995 and held several key positions, including Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Longtharai Valley; Superintendent of Police of the undivided West and South Tripura districts; Superintendent of Police (Special Branch); and Assistant Inspector General of Police (Headquarters).
Dhankar also served with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo during 2003–04. During his central deputation, he served as Superintendent of Police and Deputy Inspector General in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) between 2005 and 2013. After returning to Tripura, he served as Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) from 2013 to 2016.
Between 2016 and 2023, he was again on central deputation, serving as Inspector General (Research and Correctional Administration) in the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR and D), Inspector General (Personnel) in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and later as Joint Director and Additional Director in the CBI.
Dhankar also headed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs to investigate the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, and further details are awaited.
