SRINAGAR: US President Donald Trump and international mediators have signed a landmark Gaza ceasefire agreement at a summit in Egypt attended by world leaders, marking a significant development in Middle East diplomacy, reports CNN.
Trump described the accord as a “historic dawn of a new Middle East” during remarks delivered to the Israeli parliament, signalling optimism for regional stability.
The deal follows the return of the 20 remaining living hostages held by Hamas in Gaza to Israel, alongside the handover of the remains of four deceased hostages. In addition, Israel has released 250 Palestinian prisoners and over 1,700 Gaza detainees who had been held without charge for the past two years, as reported by BBC.
The freed hostages were reunited with their families in hospitals across Israel amid emotional scenes, while released Palestinian prisoners embraced relatives in the West Bank. In Gaza, detainees arrived by bus to waiting crowds, receiving a warm welcome from the local population.
The ceasefire agreement is expected to ease tensions in the region and pave the way for further diplomatic engagement between Israel, Palestine, and international stakeholders.
