SRINAGAR

At least two army men are reported injured as suspected militants attacked a convoy that apparently was on way from north Kashmir and moving towards south. It has triggered a massive operation on the Srinagar bypass where firing is still going on.

“Hundreds of security men from various security agencies are in battle gear and there is occasional firing taking place,” A local, who is a chain away from the spot said on phone. “I do not know who fires but the bullets are flying, occasionally.”

The scene of the clash, on the eve of prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s visit, is somewhere near the Classic Hopsital. “There was firing from classic hospital side and rest we are watching the TV,” another local  said.

Nobody is in a position to offer any details because most of the super-cops are on the scene and apparently part of action. The only detail available is from the TV crews which are not far away from the scene. TVs have been reporting two persons are injured in the incident and the operation is going on.

The “encounter’ has triggered a scare across in Srinagar. As most of the traffic that was taking bypass route stands diverted, there is massive pressure on the inner roads in the city. There are traffic jams and panic in most of the uptown.a
