SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday arrested two extortionists in the Baramulla district of north Kashmir for demanding money from a family  to get their relative released from detention under Public Safety Act (PSA).

The accused have been identified as Mudasir Ahmad Wani of Sangri & Yasir Rashid Rather of Malpora.

Baramulla Police in a Tweet said, “Two extortionists namely Mudasir Ahmad Wani of Sangri & Yasir Rashid Rather of Malpora arrested by Baramulla Police for demanding money to get the person released from PSA; Case registered & investigation going on”.

Police further in a statement said, “ A person namely Faisal Bashir Saleh S/o Bashir Ahmad Saleh R/o Kanlibagh Baramulla approached  PS Baramulla along with a written application on July 03 stating that his father namely Bashir Ahmad Saleh was detained under PSA since 2022.”

Meanwhile, two persons namely Mudasir Ahmad Wani S/O Manzoor Ahmad Wani R/O Sangri Baramulla and Yasir Rashid Rather S/O Ab Rashid Rather R/O Malpora Sheeri, claiming affiliation with a political party, approached their family to get his father released from the custody and demanded Rs 1 Lac. “Owning to poor financial condition, the family couldn’t pay them any money,” reads the statement.

“Meanwhile father of the applicant got released after quashing of PSA, and both the accused again approached them for the  money, however the family denied to pay anything. Both the accused persons forced them to pay repeatedly and visited their home and even called them multiple of times and warned them of dire consquences,” the statement said.

The police said that the complainant managed to pay Rs 10,000 to the accused, who further kept harassing him to pay entire amount of Rs 1 lakh.

In this regard case FIR No. 134/2023 u/s 384, 420 IPC stands registered in Police Station Baramulla and investigation set into motion.
