SRINAGAR: Police have arrested two men in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district for allegedly gang raping a young woman, filming the assault and subsequently showing the video to others, officials said on Tuesday.
Addressing a press conference, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Baramulla, Gurinderpal Singh, said the case came to light after the survivor approached Police Station Baramulla on July 25 and reported the alleged assault.
According to the SSP, the woman told police that she and a male friend had gone on an outing to Jalsheeri Drangbal when they were confronted by two men. The accused allegedly harassed the pair, assaulted them and sexually assaulted the woman before recording the incident on video. Police said the accused later showed the footage to other people.
Singh said the investigation initially faced difficulties because the survivor knew the accused only by their first names. However, police identified the suspects through a sustained investigation using technical evidence and human intelligence.
The two accused were arrested on Monday and have been identified as Shakir Ahmed Lone and Mohammed Ashraf, both residents of Jalsheeri. Police said both are drivers by profession, while Ashraf, aged 27, is married.
The SSP said both accused are in police custody and that the investigation is being conducted in a fair, impartial and time-bound manner in accordance with the law.
Police have not disclosed further details as the investigation is ongoing.
