SRINAGAR: Two militants are reported to have been killed in an ongoing encounter in Shopian that started early morning on Monday, police sources said. Unconfirmed reports said a soldier has survived with injuries.

“Early today, a gunfight broke out between militants and the counter-insurgent forces in Rebon area of Shopian district. Reportedly two militants have been killed so far,” one police official said. However, the identity of the militants is yet to be ascertained, he added.

Reports said the gunfight broke out after a joint team of army, Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Rebon village of Shopian. A ‘border’ village between Shopian and Kulgam districts near Imam Sahib, Reban is almost 18 km from the main town.

They said the hiding militants, opened fire on the forces which resulted in a heavy exchange of fire. Reports indicate that the toll may increase. The house in which the militants were trapped has suffered damage. The operation is still in progress.

The police spokesman has not issued any statement so far. More details are awaited.
