Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday identified two militants killed in a gunfight with the government forces in south Kashmir’s Shopian district.

A police spokesperson in a statement said, “Based on a credible input about the presence of militants in Memender area in district Shopian, a cordon and search operation was launched  today morning jointly by Police and security forces in the area.”

“As the searches were going on, the search party was fired upon by the militants. The fire was retaliated leading to a gunfight,” said the spokesman.

“In the ensuing encounter, two militants were killed and the bodies were retrieved from the site of the encounter,” he said.

“Both were affiliated with proscribed outfit JeM. One slain militant was identified as Suhail Nazir Mir son of Nazir Ahmad Mir resident of Saidapora Payeen, Shopian and from the incrimination material recovered from the site of the encounter, the other slain militant has been identified as a foreigner from Pakistan,” said police spokesman in a statement.

“As per the police records, they were involved in conspiring and executing several attacks and were wanted by the law for their complicity in a series of terror crimes including an attack on security establishments and civilian atrocities,” he said.

“Several crime cases were registered against them for their activities,” he added.

“Pertinent to mention that due to the efforts of Police and security forces, it was a clean operation and no collateral damage happened during the encounter,” said the spokesman.

“Incriminating material including arms and ammunition was recovered from the site of encounter and have been taken into case records to probe their complicity in other terror crimes. Police has registered a case and initiated investigation in the matter,” he said.

“Citizens are requested not to venture inside encounter zone since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials if any,” said police spokesman in a statement.
