SRINAGAR: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced the discontinuation of the MPhil (Masters of Philosophy) degree on December 26, 2023.
The move has come after UGC noticed that a few universities are inviting fresh applications for the MPhil programme. The notice reads that “MPhil degree is not a recognized degree.”
According to the notice clause 14 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of PhD Degree) Regulations 2022 clearly states that Higher Education Institutions shall not offer MPhil programmes. The regulations have been published in the Gazette of India on November 7, 2022.
The notice has advised authorities to take immediate steps to stop the MPhil programme for the academic year 2023-24. “Further, students are advised not to take admission in MPhil Programme,” the notice states.
MPhil is a two-year postgraduate academic research course. It also serves as a provisional enrolment for a PhD. The degree is pursued in various fields of Arts, Science, Commerce, etc. The course prepared students for the upcoming research work in their PhD courses.
