The incumbent chairperson’s term is set to end on May 25, 2025. The Ministry has invited applications from eligible candidates for this prominent position.

Under Section 84 of the Electricity Act, 2003, the chairperson must be a person of ability, integrity, and repute, with extensive knowledge and experience in engineering, finance, commerce, economics, law, or management.

According to a circular issued by the Ministry of Power (MoP), the appointment will be governed by the provisions of the Electricity Act, 2003, as well as the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission for Union Territories except Delhi (Salary, Allowances, and Other Conditions of Service of Chairperson and Member) Rules, 2007, and any subsequent amendments.

The chairperson will be entitled to remuneration equivalent to that of a Secretary to the Union Government and will serve a term of five years or until reaching the age of 65, whichever comes first.

Established in 2020, the JERC for J&K and Ladakh is a quasi-judicial body tasked with setting electricity tariffs and handling related regulatory matters. The Commission comprises a chairperson and one member.

It is worthwhile to mention that the Ministry had initiated a similar recruitment process last year to fill the sole member position in the body. [KNO]
