Two teenage boys drowned in Jhelum Thursday near Dawarun Uri in north Kashmir after “NHPC officials opened the gates of Uri I Power project without raising an alarm”, locals told Kashmir Life.

The two boys, Waheed Ahmad, 14 and Jalal Ahmad, 15, were playing near riverbank when a sudden rush of water washed them away in Jhelum.

Sarpanch Dawarun, Abdul Ahad told Kashmir Life that NHPC didn’t raise an alarm (otherwise a norm) before opening the gates of the power project to divert discharge towards Boniyar. “This is sheer callousness on part of NHPC,” the miffed Sarpanch said. “The officials should be booked for this heinous act.”

Meanwhile SDPO Uri, Kamleshwar Puri told Kashmir Life that police and army rescue teams are attempting to fish out the bodies of two drowned boys.
