Gor made the remarks after meeting Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in Srinagar during his first visit to the Union Territory.

“The United States puts out travel warnings, and every so often we re-evaluate those travel warnings. I cannot make any big announcements here today, but it is something we’re gonna look at,” Gor told reporters.

He said the US believed the governments in New Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir had taken “incredible steps” towards making the region safer.

“And so we will be looking at if the travel warning that is imposed, that is recommended by the United States, is something that should be downgraded,” he said.

Gor said Jammu and Kashmir was a “beautiful area” and that many Americans would enjoy visiting the region and exploring its beauty and opportunities.

The ambassador described his meeting with Abdullah as “very warm” and “very cordial”, saying they had discussed follow-up measures that would be taken forward in Washington and New Delhi.

“It is an important part of India. And so I’m here visiting for the first time. It is an incredibly beautiful place, and so I’m thrilled to be here, thrilled to see this place,” Gor said.

Abdullah also described the meeting as “very good” and said the discussions focused on India-US relations, with particular emphasis on what the United States could do with Jammu and Kashmir.

In a post on X, Abdullah said he had discussed with Gor the possibilities of widening and deepening engagement between Jammu and Kashmir and the US, particularly in tourism, horticulture and the new economy.

“It was a pleasure to receive US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor in Srinagar today. We had a very good conversation about the possibilities that exist to widen & deepen the engagement between J&K & the United States of America, particularly in areas like tourism, horticulture & the new economy,” Abdullah said.

He said he looked forward to continuing the engagement and taking the conversation forward.

Abdullah said the dialogue would continue between Gor and Washington as well as between the Jammu and Kashmir government and the Government of India in New Delhi.

“There are obviously certain legacy issues that over time we will be working to resolve, but we look forward to taking this conversation further,” he said.

“We are very hopeful and optimistic that the engagement between the United States of America and Jammu and Kashmir will both widen and deepen in the years ahead,” the chief minister added.

Gor had earlier said in a post on X that he appreciated the opportunity to meet Abdullah and learn more about his priorities. He said they discussed ways to deepen economic collaboration and create opportunities that would mutually benefit India and the United States.
