SRINAGAR: The United States is withdrawing personnel from key military bases in the Middle East as a precaution, following escalating tensions with Iran, according to multiple media reports.
US officials told the Associated Press that several personnel at the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar—the largest American base in the region—were advised to evacuate by Wednesday evening. The officials described the move as a precautionary measure but did not clarify whether the evacuation was mandatory or optional.
Qatar confirmed that the measures were taken in response to regional tensions. Its media office told local media that the country continues to prioritise the security of its citizens and residents, including the protection of critical infrastructure and military facilities.
Meanwhile, the US embassy in Saudi Arabia advised its personnel to exercise caution and avoid military installations, urging American citizens to limit non-essential travel in the region.
The tensions follow warnings from Iran, which told neighbouring countries hosting US troops that it would strike American bases if the US attacks Iran. The warnings come amid widespread unrest in Iran, with protests over recent weeks resulting in over 3,000 deaths.
Iranian officials also referenced a June strike on the Al Udeid base, saying it demonstrated the country’s ability to retaliate against any attack. Ali Shamkhani, senior adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, reminded US President Donald Trump of Iran’s capability to respond to military threats.
