National Conference on Wednesday demanded exemplary punishment to the killers of its youth wing activist Ishtiyaq Ahmed Chaudhary who was shot at by a member of Village Defence Committee (VDC) at Kalakote.

“It is a long impending issue and over the years it has been made clear more than once that VDCs are just organised criminal groups created by Union Home Ministry in 1995 when Kashmir was under President’s rule,” National Conference Kashmir valley Spokesperson said.

He added that “some people are creating confusion in people by calling VDCs a National Conference idea”.

He said that in the past there had been some reservations about disbanding of VDCs given the sensitive communal thread it would touch. But, he further said, it is clear now that VDCs have been responsible for more crime and anti-social activity that would not enjoy support of any community or religion.

He recounted ‘hundreds of crime’ that had been committed by VDCs members. Government must put its foot down and announce immediate disbanding of these criminal gangs.
