SRINAGAR: Kashmir’s veteran Islamic scholar Mufti Abdul Gani AZhariu is no more. He was 100-plus years of age. The former head of the Arabic department at the University of Kashmir passed away at Dar ul Aloom Deoband, the institution he was serving post-retirement. He is being laid to rest at 2 pm at Saharanpur, reports reaching here said.

Gani Azhari, as he was popularly known, was an authority on Naqishbandiya Silsila and a veteran Arabic scholar. He was not well for a long time.

Professor Azhari was a polymath Sufi, who was taught by Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madani and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. He was born in Poonch in 1922 and finally migrated to Sagam in Kokernag. He studied at Darul Uloom Deoband and Mazahir al Uloom Saharanpur. He did his PhD from Jamia al-Azhari. He retired as head of the Arabic department of the University of Kashmir in 1997.
