SRINAGAR: Veteran student leader Mohammad Anwar Ashai, who was associated with Kashmir’s student and political movements during the 1960s, died at his residence in Rajbagh, Srinagar, on Tuesday. He was the son of noted educationist and freedom fighter late Ghulam Ahmad Ashai.
According to a statement issued by his colleagues and acquaintances, Ashai died at around 10 am.
Former Srinagar mayor Junaid Azim Mattu also confirmed his death in a post on X, describing Ashai as his maternal uncle and saying he had passed away at Ashai Manzil, 14-B Raj Bagh.
Ashai was associated with student activism in Kashmir during the 1960s, a period that saw the emergence of organised student movements in the Valley. His death was mourned by colleagues and acquaintances who recalled his long association with the region’s student and political movements.
His Namaz-e-Janazah will be offered at 5:45 pm on Tuesday at his residence, Ashai Manzil, Rajbagh, Srinagar.
