In a brief but formally worded letter, Dhankhar wrote: “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, under Article 67(a) of the Constitution.”

Describing his tenure as a period of personal pride, Dhankhar said it had been a “privilege and satisfaction to witness and partake in India’s remarkable economic progress and unprecedented exponential development during this significant period.” He added that serving the nation “in this transformative era of our history has been a true honour.”

Dhankhar, who assumed office as the 14th Vice President of India in August 2022, had also served as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. A seasoned legal practitioner and former Governor of West Bengal, he was known for his sharp interventions during parliamentary proceedings and had been an outspoken advocate of constitutional propriety and federal balance.

Sources in the Vice President’s Secretariat confirmed that the resignation came after prolonged consultations with his medical team. There has been no official word yet on the nomination or schedule for electing a successor.
