Lakes and Waterways Development Department (LAWDA) was ‘forced’ to stop its demolition drive on Wednesday after an incumbent MLA from National Conference intervened and assured people that nobody will touch them provided they vote for the party.

Eyewitnesses told CNS that an incumbent MLA from ruling National Conference appeared in Chinar Bagh Dalgate and soon after his address people complained to him that LAWDA has started to demolish their (illegal) structures and the department must be stopped from doing so. “Nobody will touch you, provided you vote for our candidate and party,” the MLA told people and soon after contacted a top official, directing him to stop the demolition drive. “As the people heard MLA sahib directing the official to stop demolition drive, they all raised their hands and raised high-pitched pro-MLA and pro-National Conference slogans,” eyewitnesses said adding that soon before leaving the venue, the MLA told people in lighter vein that how many of them captured this event in their cell phones to air on social networking sites.

Secretary LAWDA Syed Shabir Ahmed admitted that the demolition drive that was to take place on Wednesday could not take off. He cited the lack of security main reason for stopping the demolition drive.

Despite repeated attempts, Vice Chairman LAWDA, Latif-ul-Zaman Deva could not be contacted.
