SRINAGAR: A day after the JK Waqf board announced its decision to appoint capable individuals to fulfill the positions of Imaams, Khateebs, and Muazzins, the Jammu Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) called the decision unilateral.

National Conference spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq said the degrees cannot be substituted for the experience that religious scholars achieve throughout their lives. “While it’s important to give young individuals opportunities, it’s crucial to recognize that experience comes with age. For a religious institution like the Waqf board, it’s necessary to have religious scholars with expertise not only in their religious domain but also in worldly affairs. It’s not possible to replace seasoned Molvis, preachers, and Mauzins with a simple decision.”

He further said that the JK administration should refrain from making unilateral decisions with regard to the appointment of Imam Sahiban in Masjids which are under the direct management of the J&K Waqf Board.

“Even if the situation demands it, new recruits should undergo a probationary period under the guidance of seniors, and gradually transition out those who are unable to fulfill their responsibilities due to health or other reasons. However, making unilateral decisions is not only inappropriate but will also fail to achieve the intended purpose,” he added.
