SRINAGAR: National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reaffirmed to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah that the Union government will honour its commitment to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking to reporters in Anantnag, Abdullah said the Prime Minister had recently conveyed the assurance to Omar Abdullah and expressed hope that the commitment would be honoured.
Addressing concerns over the delay in approval of the Jammu and Kashmir government’s business rules, Abdullah said his party was seeking not only the rules but also the restoration of statehood.
“Statehood is their promise before the world. We are waiting for it,” he said.
The remarks come days after the National Conference announced a protest in Delhi on the opening day of Parliament’s monsoon session to press for the restoration of statehood.
